I’ve been very fortunate to be able to interview many journalists in the media, including national television producers. One of my favorite interviews was with a former Oprah producer. We know Oprah has the golden touch and anything or anyone she recommends turns to gold. I was always curious what Oprah saw in Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil, Rachael Ray, and Suze Orman BEFORE she put them on her show and made them all household names that made her want to use them, trust them, and endorse them. Oprah would not just put anyone on her show as an expert. What I learned is that the number one quality, or characteristic, of a great television guest is authenticity. The producer and host need to make sure that the person they are using as the expert comes across to their audience as someone who is believable and authentic. So, if your goal is to appear on television as an expert, make sure that the message you are sending is something that is authentic and true to yourself and your brand.
